Roland

Roland Monteil

Roland Monteil is a Paladin who has sworn to the Oath of Avenging Absolution. It is often rumored that he also practices the martial arts as a Monk but he is known to have flatly denied this on several occasions.

Early Life

Roland is an only child who grew up with his mother, Constance Monteil. His father volunteered to fight in 'the conflict' when Roland was only 7 or 8 years old. Roland has only the vaguest memories of his father and never heard much from his mother except that he had been named for him.

Constance insured that Roland always had the best education and exposure to the finest culture available throughout Civitas. His scholastic records, however, reflect that Roland was much more interested in finding adventure or practicing his charm with the ladies then paying attention to his studies.

Immediately after meeting the lovely young noble human Ariana, Roland immediately settled down and became a much more serious and respectable member of the community. Ariana and Roland were married within their first year together and were soon joined by their daughter, Seraphina.

Ebon Lotus Abbey

Roland was a well liked and respected young deacon in the Church of Nephthys living in Civitas with his beautiful wife, Ariana. The church leaders saw him as a devout, optimistic, and jovial man whom would go far within the church and could do much to help them. Upon hearing that Roland had been chosen for the honor of serving as the church's primary researcher at the largest and most esteemed cloister in the church, Ariana would hear nothing of any concerns for her safety and immediately began to pack their humble belongings for the long trip. The Ebon Lotus Abbey was located high in the Shadowfell Range far from the distractions of the rest of Civitas.

After settling in their new chambers in the monastery, Roland settled in to a peaceful routine of prayer in the morning, studying in the great library after lunch, and then returning to his family for a restful evening. As the autumn and winter passed his studies began to focus more and more on the history and arcana surrounding the Ancient Cult of Red Wizards.

Early in the darkness under a new moon, shortly before the waking bell was to be rung, the abbey was beseiged by a horde of demons and devils. Roland;s first memory of the day was being amidst the noise and chaos. He suddenly charged at a tall dark hooded figure who seemed to be directing much of the action. Without breaking stride, the figure turned his head toward Roland, scowled, and flicked his left arm. Roland awoke with the midday sun over head only to survey the utter destruction surrounding the abbey as one of only a handful or survivors from the slaughter. Digging through the debris where his chambers had been only hours before, Roland discovered the remains of Ariana and Seraphina in repose together.

The SGAR Adventure

Roland has sworn to Nephthys that he will find justice against those who ruined his life and desecrated her temple. He spent the next several decades training, living off the land, and seeking information just to lead him to the next clue.

Recently, Roland has joined with a band of adventurers whom he believes will bring him face to face with his sworn enemy.
